TOEFL iBT: An Exciting New Development in Language Testing
On September 2005 a new generation of TOEFL test, TOEF Internet–based test (iBT), was introduced, which is an exciting development in language testing history. This test emphasizes integrated skills and provides evaluation of the speaking skill for the first time.
Some interesting facts about the new TOEFL iBT are: *
- It tests all four language skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing
- The Speaking section includes six tasks
- The Writing section includes 2 tasks
- It is about 4 hours long
- It is offered in a network of internet-based centres.
- No Grammar section. Grammar is evaluated in Speaking and Writing responses
- It allows note taking
- Total score will be 0 - 120

TOEFL iBT Preparation Program
TOEFL preparation Program at ALMA English Institute is based on a thorough understanding of the new TOEFL Internet Ebases test (iBT) and is designed for ESL learners who are preparing for this internationally recognized university entrance exam and improving their general English proficiency at the same time. This program is especially designed to prepare students for the new challenges of TOEFL iBT and offers an intensive study and practice for this new version of TOEF test.
The program includes:
- Key test-taking skills and strategies to improve TOEFL iBT scores
- Use of computer lab and appropriate software
- Practice individual test sections of the TOEFL iBT
- Review key grammar points
- Learn techniques to build vocabulary
- Improve listening comprehension skills
- Write and receive feedback on practice essays
- Improve test performance under time limits
- Take a complete practice test of the TOEFL iBT
- Small class sizes for individual attention
- Highly qualified and experienced instructors
The program requires an intermediate level of English language proficiency and will be presented in modular format. Each module will take 4 weeks to complete.
Classes can be taken from 9:00 to 12:00 in the morning or from 1:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon, Monday to Thursday.
LPI preparation Course
The Language Proficiency Index (LPI) was developed at the University of British Columbia and is a two and a half-hour examination that provides information about an individual's competency in English, particularly competence in summary and essay writing and in the recognition of common errors in English usage and sentence structure.
The LPI is composed of four sections:
- Sentence Structure: Identifying errors in sentence structure (10 points)
- English Usage: Identifying errors in English usage (10 points)
- Paragraph Development, Structure, and Content: Evaluating and/or summarizing short prose passages (20 points);
- Essay Writing: Writing an argumentative essay (40 points).
The LPI is required and accepted by most colleges and universities and some professional organizations within British Columbia for entering a post secondary program.
ALMA's LPI Preparation Course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the test and helps you develop all the necessary skills and techniques to successfully pass the test.
The course requires an upper intermediate level of English language proficiency.
